I’ve been burned by vendor design guides before. You’ve probably been burned by vendor design guides before. You find one on a documentation portal, it’s got a great title, it has diagrams, it has CLI snippets, but then you notice it was last updated in 2021. The software version it references is three major versions behind. Half the features it talks about have been renamed or deprecated. The hardware it references? End of sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the quiet dirty secret of vendor “validated designs.” Vendors publish them, call them validated, and then let them sit on a website collecting digital dust while the actual product marches on without them. By the time you find the doc, it’s a historical artifact dressed up as a recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So when Nokia sat down at NFD40 and walked us through their Validated Design program, I was ready to be skeptical. And then Vivek Venugopal said something that made me actually pay attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The framing Vivek used came straight from his boss, Michael Bushong. “Build a network like you build an airplane.” The idea being that the risk of failure is unacceptable, so you don’t ship something until it’s been tested, validated, and documented to a standard you’d actually stake your reputation on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nokia NVD workflow isn’t just “an engineer wrote a design guide.” It starts with real customer and field input \u2014 the first AI-focused NVD they released came from Lenovo telling Nokia “this is the t-shirt size our customers are actually asking for.” From there it goes through an ideation phase, review cycles with field-facing teams, a formal solutions requirements document, a full test suite, and hardware validation in Nokia’s labs. Real hardware. Real GPUs. Not just simulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The output is a tested reference architecture that covers the full stack \u2014 fabric design, underlay, overlay, storage, front-end, and even endpoint benchmarking against public ML Commons numbers. They’re not just validating that the switches talk to each other. They’re validating that the design actually performs when you put real AI workloads on top of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That’s already more rigorous than most of what gets labeled “validated” in this industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here’s where it got interesting for me. Vivek mentioned that Nokia supports each NVD for a minimum of four years, and that they publish an updated version on a yearly cadence tied to a stable software release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let that sink in for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four years. Yearly updates. That’s not a design guide, that’s a product lifecycle. Vivek even said exactly that: “It works more like a product than a design choice.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n This matters more than it might seem on the surface. Most vendor-validated designs have an implicit shelf life of “until the team that wrote it moves on to something else.” There’s no commitment, no versioning, no update cadence. You find a reference architecture, you don’t know if it’s current, and you have no way of knowing when or if it’ll ever get updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nokia is explicitly committing to something different. When you build a network based on one of their NVDs, you’re not just getting a starting point \u2014 you’re getting a documented, supported baseline that Nokia is on the hook to keep current. That changes the calculus on whether it’s actually useful versus a point-in-time document you’ll outgrow in 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There’s another piece of this that’s worth calling out, especially for mid-market shops that don’t have a lab full of Nokia gear to test against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nokia is publishing the ContainerLab digital twins of their validated designs to a public GitHub repo.
